TEACCH (translated into French, "Traitement et éducation des enfants autistes ou atteints de troubles de la communication associés") is a structured educational program.
Structured education aims to structure and adapt the environment of people with autism to help them in their daily lives and give them a certain degree of autonomy. This method is managed by the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and the main regional centres are in the United States.
The TEACCH program is particularly applicable in schools and also at home.
Main objectives of the method
Increase communication and appropriate social behaviour.
Teach the person how to learn by paying attention to the following skills: being attentive, imitating, developing receptive and expressive language, pre-academic skills and personal autonomy.
Reduce or even eliminate inappropriate behaviour.
Assist in the development of new skills.
Facilitate inclusion in mainstream settings to access new learning
Specificities of the method
The principle is to arrange the elements that surround the child by structuring the environment as much as possible
Structured education: "Having noticed that autistic children had fears, perseverations, rituals (noises, change of position, eating next to the same person...), these changes are reduced to a minimum," explains Vinca Rivière, doctor of psychology.
TEACCH is less interested in changing inappropriate behaviour than the ABA method. It is more of an educational and developmental method
In schools that offer the TEACCH method, children follow this program all day long.
Who is this method for ?
This method is therefore intended for ASD children, in school or at home. Unlike Denver or ABA, this method is not an early intervention program, so it is also intended for children over 10 years of age.
According to this study, TEACCH had little effect on cognitive functions of perception, motor skills or language. The gains in children's behaviour and adaptability were greater.
